Union minister V K Singh calls NYT ‘Supari Media’ over its report on Pegasus

The New York Times’ story that the Indian government bought the Pegasus espionage technology in 2017 as part of a contract with Israel was dubbed “Supari Media” by Union Minister Gen. VK Singh on Saturday.

According to a story in The New York Times, the Israeli spyware Pegasus and a missile system were the “centrepieces” of a nearly USD 2 billion transaction of advanced weaponry and intelligence hardware between India and Israel in 2017.

The suspected use of the NSO Group’s Pegasus software by several governments to spy on journalists, human rights campaigners, politicians, and others in a number of nations, including India, sparked a significant scandal last year, igniting concerns about privacy issues.

Mr. Singh, Minister of State for Road Transport, Highways, and Civil Aviation, responded to the NYT report on Twitter, saying, “Can you trust NYT?” They’re referred to as “Supari Media.” Mr. Singh is a former Army Chief of Staff.
