19  Rajya Sabha members set to retire in April; five BJP and six Congress lawmakers to hang up boots

Five members of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and six members of the Congress are among the 19 Rajya Sabha members who will retire in April. With the retirements, the Congress will have 28 seats in the Upper House, down from 34, while the BJP will have 92 seats, down from 97. With 237 members, the BJP is the single largest party in the House of 245 members.

During the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address on Monday, Congressman Anand Sharma intimated twice that this could be his final contribution in the Upper House.

With the retirement of nominated members who have opted to join with the BJP, the BJP’s numbers in the Upper House will decrease. Subramaniam Swamy and actor Suresh Gopi are among the members.
