On Thursday i.e., 24 February 2022, Russia launched an invasion of Ukraine by land, air and sea. This attack, shocking for the international community, is being called the biggest attack by one state against another in Europe since the Second World War.
Russian missiles rained down on Ukrainian cities. Explosions of the missiles could be heard before dawn in the Ukrainian capital Kiev, along with gunfire at its main airport. As per Ukrainian reporters, columns of troops poured across its borders into the eastern Chernihiv, Kharkiv and Luhansk regions, and landed by sea at the cities of Odessa and Mariupol in the south. At least eight people had been killed and nine were wounded by the Russian shelling, an adviser to the Ukrainian Minister of Internal Affairs said.
According to Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin’s aim was to destroy his state. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on Twitter: “This is a war of aggression. Ukraine will defend itself and will win. The world can and must stop Putin.”
Mr. Putin declared in a televised address that he had ordered “a special military operation to protect people, including Russian citizens who had been subjected to genocide in Ukraine. And for this we will strive for the demilitarisation and denazification of Ukraine”.This accusation is described as absurd propaganda by the West.
After the attack, U.S. President Joe Biden said his administration was in consultation with India and in the process of resolving issues stemming from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He also announced additional sanctions on Russia along with other western countries.
