Pushkar Singh Dhami, is set to be Uttarakhand CM Despite losing assembly elections

Dhami is set to become chief minister for second term. He was chosen by the BJP for the office of CM once more, this time for the lengthier version of the game. It was a difficult choice because Dhami had lost his own seat despite the party’s strong showing in the hill state. Dhami was pulled from obscurity by the BJP last July and appointed Chief Minister of Uttarakhand in a matter of months. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh compared Pushkar Singh Dhami to cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni before the Uttarakhand assembly elections. He described Dhami as a ‘excellent finisher,’ implying that he will help the BJP gain the votes it needs to win the election.Rajnath Singh reportedly used the cricket analogy to say that Dhami was working tirelessly as the CM and needs to play a test match as well. Last July, the BJP pulled Dhami from obscurity and appointed him as the chief minister of Uttarakhand, just months before the state elections. He was also the third leader to hold the position of CM in the year 2021. Trivendra Singh Rawat had to make way for Tirath Singh Rawat earlier this year. Dhami seems to have vindicated the party’s faith in him. The BJP was re-elected in Uttarakhand, marking the first time in the state’s 21-year history that a single political party has won a second term in office. Dhami, on the other hand, lost by around 6,500 votes in his own Khatima constituency. When he first entered office in July, he was the state’s youngest chief minister at 45 years old. The state was dealing with a slew of issues at the time, and with elections looming, Dhami had little time to prove himself. Covid had harmed the state’s economy, the Char Dham priests were protesting a new regulatory body, and a big Covid testing scam had already made headlines. Dhami, like other BJP chief ministers, positioned himself as the one who carried out Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘great vision’ for the state’s growth via a ‘double-engine’ government. Dhami is frequently referred to as a protege of Maharashtra Governor and former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Bhagat Singh Koshyari, with whom he served as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) and adviser.
