In retaliation for the South’s live-fire drills in an area along the interior border, North Korea
on Tuesday launched a barrage of artillery shells into the waters close to its rival South Korea
for the second straight day.
Following South Korean artillery drills in an area close to their land border, the North Korean
People’s Army General Staff claimed it had authorised front-line units to fire artillery into the
sea as a warning. This was followed by the firings. In addition, North Korea launched 130
artillery shells into South Korean territorial seas on Monday, accusing the latter of inciting
unwarranted tension in the front lines.
The most recent military strike by North Korea has exacerbated hostility between the rivals,
whose ties have drastically deteriorated during a protracted break in nuclear talks between
Washington and Pyongyang.
