The nation’s most charitable billionaire has switched his attention to providing healthcare for the
underprivileged, more than 20 years after founding the Azim Premji Foundation to enhance instruction
in government schools.
Two executives who are aware of the initiative indicated that the foundation would soon open primary
healthcare clinics in some of the most underdeveloped areas in India, which will be followed by multi-
specialty hospitals and a medical university.
The foundation was founded in 2001, and its choice to make healthcare its second emphasis area
represents the most significant development in its history. With a $38 billion corpus, the foundation is
the fifth-largest private endowment in the world.
