Politically significant results emerged from Thursday’s byelections for one Lok Sabha seat and six Assembly seats as the BJP managed to penetrate Azam Khan’s stronghold of Rampur in Uttar Pradesh and humiliated a former ally, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, by defeating his party’s candidate in the Kurhani Assembly seat of Bihar.
The Samajwadi Party (SP) founder’s daughter-in-law Dimple Yadav won the lone Lok Sabha byelection held in Mainpuri, which was required due to Singh’s passing. Ms. Yadav defeated Raghuraj Singh Shakya of the BJP by a margin of 2,88,136 votes.
In Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, the Assembly seats of Sardarshahar and Bhanupratapur were held by the Congress, respectively, while in Odisha, Padampur was easily won by the BJD.
