In Rajya Sabha, a private member’s bill on the uniform civil code is introduced; it encounters fierce opposition

On December 9, 2022, members of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha loudly protested the introduction of a private member bill by a BJP member on the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) throughout the nation. The opposition members asked BJP member Kirodi Lal Meena to withdraw the Bill and chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar to oppose it because it would undermine the nation’s secular fabric.

The National Inspection and Investigation Committee is to be established as part of the UCC preparation and implementation process in India, according to the bill. For a private member’s bill to be approved by Parliament, the government must support it.

The introduction of the measure was submitted to a voice vote, with 63 votes in favour and 23 votes against, and was approved. During the discussion and vote, a large number of opposition members from the Congress, Trinamool Congress, and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) were absent.
