Sushil Kumar Modi of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stated on Monday in the Rajya Sabha that same-sex marriages shouldn’t be legalised and that the matter cannot be determined solely by the courts.
“Two judges cannot decide such societal matters in a single sitting. Instead, there should be a debate in Parliament and society”, Mr. Modi added, noting that “left-liberal democratic individuals and campaigners” were trying to legalise same-sex marriages by imitating Western culture.
Same-sex marriages are “against our culture and ethos,” according to Mr. Modi, who stated this in a Zero Hour submission to the Rajya Sabha. He also urged the Union administration to vehemently argue its position in court.
