The Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday that a cinema owner has the authority to prohibit moviegoers from bringing food and drinks inside the theatre.
A bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha emphasised that a movie theatre is the private property of its owner and that he is free to impose whatever rules and regulations he sees fit, as long as they do not conflict with the public good or safety.
The Court further stated that if a spectator enters a theatre, he or she must abide by the owner’s restrictions, and that this is undoubtedly a matter of business judgement.
