Just one week after the arrival of his leftist challenger, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Jair Bolsonaro’s supporters invaded Congress, the Supreme Court, and the presidential palace in the nation’s capital on Sunday. They refused to recognise their candidate’s electoral defeat.
Thousands of protesters broke over security barriers, scaled roofs, shattered windows, and entered all three structures, which were thought to be largely empty on the weekend. Some of the protesters demanded military action to either instal Mr. Bolsonaro, a member of the far-right or remove Mr. Lula from office.
In a message posted to Twitter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed “deep concern” and said, “We extend our entire support to the Brazilian government.”
