Following more than one flag being taken into the stands by supporters on Day 1 of the year’s first Grand Slam tournament, flags from Russia and Belarus were prohibited from the Australian Open venue on Tuesday.
At Melbourne Park, flags are typically permitted to be flown during games. However, Tennis Australia changed its stance with regard to the two nations that started the invasion of Ukraine almost a year ago.
Due to the conflict in Ukraine, athletes from Russia and Belarus were prohibited from competing at Wimbledon and team competitions like the Billie Jean King Cup and Davis Cup last year. Invasion by Russia took place in February, assisted by Belarus.
