A Delhi Rouse Avenue court dealing with the phoney CBI report case [CBI v Closure report] on Tuesday noted that there is no statutory immunity in India for journalists from disclosing their sources to investigating agencies if such disclosure is necessary.
Judge Anjani Mahajan ruled that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) should not have stopped the entire investigation simply because the concerned journalists refused to disclose their respective sources, as mentioned in the final report.
According to the court, the investigating agency can always inform journalists that disclosing the source is crucial to the course of the inquiry.
