A Muslim man was recently denied bail by the Madhya Pradesh High Court on charges that he pretended to be a Hindu in order to rape a Hindu woman under the guise of marriage [Hashim v. State of MP].
Justice Anil Verma said that such crimes were becoming more prevalent every day and warned that this was detrimental for social cohesion among the various ethnic groups.
The woman, a Scheduled Caste Hindu, knew the accused Hashim a year before the incident but was unaware of his religion, according to the prosecution.
