States are given notice by the Supreme Court to keep an eye on prisoners’ early release.

On Monday, February 6, 2023, the States of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra were given notice by the Supreme Court bench made up of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice PS Narasimha, and Justice JB Pardiwala to address the question of monitoring the early release of inmates.

The notification was sent out while the court heard a case involving the release of prisoners in the State of Uttar Pradesh. The judges took note of the numerous cases of inmates being released too soon that kept coming up in court and invoking Article 32 of the Constitution.
As a result, the court gave the States of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra notice to investigate the problem of monitoring for early prisoner release.
Judge DY Chandrachud said: “We have issued notice for other states as well because we want to monitor the other states too.”
