Visit by the Italian PM to India is a step towards mending relations after the marine incident.

The Italian marine firing incident and the ban on Italian defence manufacturers following the Augusta Westland helicopter contract dispute severely damaged bilateral relations.
In order to ensure that their bilateral ties reach their maximum potential, India and Italy have resolved to raise them to the level of a strategic partnership, putting aside previous tensions. The alliance was established during Giorgia Meloni’s early-this-week trip to New Delhi as prime minister of Italy.
The Italian prime minister strategically chose to visit India on her first trip as prime minister of Asia because she wanted to strengthen connections with New Delhi. Meloni (46) sparked a lot of attention in the diplomatic and strategic circles in India as the first female prime minister of Italy and one of the youngest leaders to hold that position.
In the wake of the Westland helicopter affair dispute and the Italian marine firing incident, Indo-Italian ties had been tensed for a very long time.
